Madison Square Park Playground Dedication
Tuesday March 6, 2012
On March 10, the playground at Madison Square Park will be officially dedicated in honor of Officer Moira Ann Smith. A true New York hero, Officer Smith lost her life at the World Trade Center in the September 11th attacks. Officer Smith was a first responder to the scene and successfully evacuated hundreds of people from Tower Two. After making sure those that she helped evacuate received the necessary medical assistance, Officer Smith returned to Tower Two in an attempt to try to help more people to safety. Officer Smith perished in the collapse of Tower Two.
Officer Smith served the 13th precinct, encompassing Madison Square Park and the surrounding neighborhood. She was the only female NYPD officer to lose her life during 9/11. Officer Smith was survived by her husband and two-year-old daughter.
The dedication ceremony will be held at the playground near 25th Street and Madison Avenue this Saturday from 11am-12pm. There will be remarks by NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, NYC Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn and Conservancy Chairman David Berliner. Please join to honor the courage and sacrifice of Officer Moira Ann Smith.View all Headlines
