Billed as a “social club and a fitness studio,” Uplift Studios in NoMad New York provide two ways to unwind for the women of New York City. The female-only gym offers many $40 classes under the umbrella of “Raise the Bar” including “Tighten and Tequila,” “Workout and Wine,” “Cardio and Cocktails” and “Bootcamp, Bloodies and Brunch.” Basically, the concept is that after a workout for a minimum of 45 minutes, the club offers its members unlimited wine or cocktails as a reward.

The idea was hatched as a result of a rainy day. After torrents of rain interrupted a Yoga class in Central Park, the Uplift crew shepherded all the of the participants to a neighboring bar. They saw the camaraderie created by this social setting and decided to incorporate this into their gym. According to owner Leanne Shear, “A lot of fitness is very preachy in a sense [that] it has to be all or nothing … to never have a glass of wine or a slice of pizza. Having wine with a girlfriend is very much a part of a healthy, balanced life.”

If alcohol is not your “cup of tea” you can still attend pilates, traditional yoga and zumba classes at Uplift Studios. In addition the gym offers Wi-Fi service,  snacks, phone chargers and ice tea. This is an example another interesting business thriving in NoMad New York.
