For those looking for small office space to rent, The Townsend is a unique find. Designed in the neo-Renaissance style by Cyrus L. Eidlitz, this handsome commercial office building is light, refined and intelligently detailed. When it was built, it was down the block from the Fifth Avenue Hotel and in the center of the most prestigious homes, shops and theatres of the time.
The building is built on a human scale and still maintains the elegance of Beaux Arts New York City — including a stunning central staircase with elaborately detailed cast iron pillars and guard rails lit by a central skylight. And it still benefits from the leapfrog safety features engineered into the building when it was designed.
The Townsend was extensively restored and technologically upgraded by Kew Management in the 1980s and 90s and was highly celebrated on its 100th birthday in 1996. This building and the St. James are the flagship buildings of Kew Management, which maintains its offices in the Townsend.
