Steve Coleman and Five Elements at Jazz Gallery
Celebrated jazz saxophonist Steve Coleman will head up two nights at the Jazz Gallery in NoMad this weekend.
Coleman is the son of free-jazz innovator and Pulitzer Prize-winning saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Steve Coleman’s work focuses on what he describes as M-base concepts. In essence, M-base (Macro-Basic Array of Structured Extenporizations) strives to “creatively express our experiences as they are today and to . . . build common creative musical languages,” within a free jazz context.
Coleman’s band, Five Elements, features Coleman on alto sax, Jonathan Finlayson on trumpet, Miles Okazki on guitar, Anthony Tidd on bass, and Sean Rickman on drums. The band will play sets at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday night. Tickets are $20 per set for the public and $10 for members of the Jazz Gallery.
