Stephen Starr and Justin Smillie have plans to open a new restaurant Upland in the NoMad District this October

Restaurateur Stephen Starr has announced plans to open a new restaurant in the NoMad District. The restaurant, called Upland, will be Starr’s fifth restaurant in New York following the popularity of his other ventures: Buddakan, Morimoto, Caffé Storico and El Vez.

To run the kitchen, Starr has brought on Chef Justin Smillie, who recently left his position at Il Buco Alimentari to join the partnership. Upland is named for Smillie’s hometown in California, and there are plans to serve an appropriately California-inspired menu. While the full menu is not yet known, Smillie has touted that they would feature dishes like his sprouted chickpea croquettes and coffee-soaked lamb belly with okra, tomatoes and beans.

The restaurant plans to open sometime during October in the former Manzanilla space at 345 Park Avenue South. Be sure to check back for more information, as details develop.
