Kenny Wheeler Memorial Concert at Jazz Gallery
This Tuesday, popular NoMad music venue Jazz Gallery will host a memorial concert for Canadian composer, trumpeter and flugelhornist Kenny Wheeler, who passed away this past September at the age of 84.
Wheeler was a pioneer in multiple genres, and performed alongside leading rock, jazz, avant-garde and free-jazz artists in every decade since the 1950s. He has released 23 albums as a bandleader and collaborated as a sideman with a host of greats from Bill Bruford, Fred Hersch, Philly Joe Jones, Anthony Braxton, Bill Frisell and Steve Coleman to Joni Mitchell and Elton John. Wheeler passed away this past September at the age of 84.
The tribute, organized by Andrew Rathbun, will feature a big band performing some of Wheeler’s notable works. The ensemble includes five woodwinds, four trumpets, four trombones, a five-piece rhythm section, Aubrey Johnson on vocals and special guest soloist Tim Hagans. The band will play one set at 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Wheeler family to assist with medical costs.
