Justin Smillie’s Upland Opens Tomorrow in NoMad
Justin Smillie’s highly-anticipated California-themed restaurant Upland will open tomorrow at 345 Park Avenue South in the heart of the NoMad District.
While the restaurant has not released a detailed menu, Smillie has been dropping clues via his Instagram account. The account’s photos, along with statements from the chef, promise that the restaurant will combine Smillie’s expertise in Italian cuisine with accents from the foods of his California childhood.
In an interview with restaurant news site Eater NY, Smillie explained, “I’m excited about coming into citrus season… I wanted to explore the flavors of my early childhood, because California is such a melting pot in between Asian and Mexican, with really, really fresh cut produce all of the time. I’m going back to my roots a bit.”
Smillie went on to discuss his hopes for the restaurant in what he envisions will be a true NoMad experience:
“I just want to keep putting out really fresh, really beautiful and unaffected food. I want people to have fun here. I’m not really the kind of guy who likes to eat in church. I want it to be an American brasserie, really alive… vibrant, but super comfortable. Everything here is about being comfortable and enjoying the simple pleasures.”
Upland sounds like the perfect fit for the unique NoMad crowd of hard working and playing creatives and techies.
