Chef George Mendes announced via Twitter that he will open a new restaurant in NoMad this fall. The restaurant, which has yet to be given a name, will feature a rustic Portuguese menu and plans to open in December.

The plan is for the restaurant to be equipped with a large wood-burning oven and feature a selection of Portuguese wines, craft beers on draft and potentially even imported Portuguese beers. The menu will be centered around what Mendes called “peasant dishes” like gratins, casseroles, a lamb braise, bacalhau and butterflied, flattened chicken with piri piri (a South African chili).

Mendes, who first garnered acclaim for his 17th Street restaurant Aldea, has also been in the news recently for the premiere of his 100 Sardines food stand at Mad. Sq. Eats (link). Mendes’s new restaurant will be located at 835 Avenue of the Americas near West 29th Street.
